History

Glasshouse started life in 1984 when Michael Guy set up a one-man operation in Sharjah, producing decorative glass panels using deep sandblasting and carving. At the time, it was the only company in the UAE specializing in decorative glass. A lucky break (literally) brought an urgent project for the then Crown Prince – now ruler- of Dubai for etched mirrors, tabletops, and stained glass with custom coloured mouth-blown glass. The company began hiring and training skilled workers, and as it grew, Glasshouse became pioneers in Stained (leaded) glass. Keeping to the time-honoured traditional methods, and the world’s highest quality materials, Glasshouse won contracts in competition with the top UK and European companies for ruler’s palaces, in Dubai, Sharjah, and Muscat, as well as many private residences, and commercial spaces. In 1992, Glasshouse was invited to join the GIBCA group of companies, with Alico Aluminium, and Gulf Glass Industries – leaders in aluminium and architectural glass respectively. Glasshouse pioneered Ceramic printing in the UAE with the first screen-printed and tempered glass façade projects. Their current digital ink-jet printer creates stunning permanent ceramic imagery at high resolution, and at a scale of up to 5m x 2.8m. The Royal Atlantis on Dubai Palm is a showcase for many of their glass features of different kinds. Amongst many other notable works, the company boasts involvement in producing the decorative glass for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, thousands of square metres of colour coated wall cladding for Dubai and Abu Dhabi International Airports, iconic features such as the 25 metre high IMF World Bank monument standing proudly next to the World Trade Centre since 2003, and the design and execution of the 22 metre high cascading River of Light in the Fairmont Hotel Shaikh Zayed Road. Enquiries from customers big and small are invited.
