Are you an interior designer? Keen to specify local materials and makers but not sure where to start? Here’s a list of ten Scottish furniture makers, joiners, upholsterers, fabric suppliers, lighting manufacturers, stained glass fabricators, foundries and material suppliers to inspire you.
Morton Young and Borland Ltd, known as MYB Textiles, has been based in Newmilns producing Scottish Madras Lace since the early 1900’s. MYB Textiles now manufacture a range of luxury and madras lace, produced on traditional, century old Nottingham lace looms that have been adapted to work with modern electronic Jacquard looms.
Alongside their own ranges of Madras and Nottingham lace and blinds they also offer a bespoke design service. With an archive of over 50,000 original lace drawings at your fingertips, along with the technical capabilities to transfer CAD drawings directly onto looms, the process of creating bespoke pieces at MYB must no doubt be very exciting for a designer.

10kH is a small upholstery company based in Glasgow run by upholsterers, Silvia Perez and Rose Black. 10kH undertake a wide range of projects including bespoke pieces, one-offs and sample production runs.
10kH are committed to sourcing and using unique and beautiful textiles and endeavour to foster collaboration with like minded others in the creative industry.

Glasgow-based Silo Design and Build, run by Simon Harlow, is one of those fabricators who can turn his hand at many things, working across wood, metal and digital processes. Simon is passionate about making and materials, and sees the business as a way for him to continuously explore material properties, processes and application, and to apply this knowledge to the development of furniture and buildings.
His projects span furniture, artwork, sculpture and installations and recently included the Turner Prize winner by ASSEMBLE which you can read more about here

Moody Monday is a screenprinting studio based in Edinburgh’s St Margaret’s House, run by Eliza Kesuma. Moody Monday specialise in screenprinting bespoke print to wall coverings, fabric and interior accessories and typically work with interior designers, and specifiers for commercial projects.

Sinclairs are a fabricator of bespoke curtains and soft furnishings based in Edinburgh. They work with everything from curtains, blinds and bed canopies to valances and cushions and typically work with interior designers specifying residential homes, restaurants and hotels. They usually work with one-off bespoke pieces, but also have capacity for batch production.

After working in glass studios all around England, Richard set up his workshop in Brodick on the Isle of Arran. Typically he works with interior designers and architects, producing one-off pieces of stained glass and mirror to the client’s design.

The 5th Marquess of Bute set up fabric manufacturer, Bute Fabrics, in 1947 to provide employment for returning servicemen and servicewomen. Since then it has become an internationally renowned contemporary fabric designer and manufacturer. You’ll find Bute Fabrics in Buckingham Palace, the BBC and the Royal Festival Hall, along with countless hotels and restaurants.
Bute Fabrics design and weave high quality wool upholstery fabrics on dobby looms. If you’re looking to specify locally-produced fabric, Bute produce a large range of fabrics and throws which can be perused in their swatchbook.

Back in 1995, Mike Stoane set up this company driven by the desire to find a different, more rewarding way to make a living, by making aesthetically simple, good quality light fittings in Scotland.
Based in Loanhead, Mike’s 50-strong workforce now produce bespoke runs of light fittings for the likes of museums, hotels, churches and commercial properties.

Since 1991 a band of dedicated craftsmen have been keeping alive the traditions of bespoke carpet and rug making in the west of Scotland. Hand tufted on the shores of the Clyde, Turnberry’s rugs can be found as far afield as The Vatican, in British Embassies, and has even been used in the Big Brother House!
If you’re looking to specify a rug or carpet, Turnberry sell a range of their owns designs and colours to order. If you’re looking for something more bespoke, they also produce one-off rugs in the colours and pattern required.

After watching many local foundries close their doors, 27 year-old foundryman, Fraser Waugh, set up Edinburgh Cast Metals to keep the tradition alive. The foundry specialises in cast iron work, producing gates, railings and fireplaces for residential homes and public buildings.
