Day 8: The Make Works Christmas Countdown

For the Make Works Christmas Countdown this year, we will be telling you a bit about different materials each day, with suggestions about where you can work with it in Scotland.

Day 8: Stone 

From sculptural work, stone lettering to stone carving - stone has been utilised by mankind for almost 800,000 years. Quarried from the ground and found with many complex natural patterns and colours; the material is heavy and long-lasting - and can be rough, smooth, precise, complex, dry, brittle.

In Scotland, you can have stone machined at Fyfe Glenrock in Old Meldrum. You can also work with a traditional hand letterer Gillian Forbes near Kinross.
