B Scenic Construction are bespoke fabricators of film, television and theatre props, exhibition and interior displays.
We asked Tod Zonderman, Director of B Scenic, to tell us about some of the fantastic projects they've been involved with.
Tell us about the first job that B Scenic did
The first significant project Bob did after he formed the company 12 years ago was the IRN BRU Cuckoo television commercial designed by Tom Sayer. An entertaining commercial seen all over the country at one time.
We know that you work with some amazing clients, where can we see your work out in the world?
Over the years we have worked on some popular television adverts, independent films and theatre sets that have made their way around the world. Recently we have done some interesting work for Scottish Natural Heritage including the Beinn Eighe Visitor Centre and Nature Hide and Forvie Sands Viewing Platform. They are beautiful locations and I recommend everyone visit. We have completed new permanent exhibitions for the Bank of England Museum which contain some fascinating information on one of the world's oldest financial institutions. We are near completion on permanent exhibits for the new Biggar Museum that showcase the cultural and industrial history of the Borders. We have just delivered a set to The National Theatre of Scotland for their new production of Yer Granny which has just opened in Glasgow and will be touring the UK.
What is it like working in Edinburgh?
Edinburgh is an exciting environment to run a company like ours. We have been fortunate to develop a diverse client base that have Edinburgh connections and very wide vision that extend globally. And, there are many designers, artist and skilled craftspeople locally.
Why do you think manufacturing in Edinburgh is important?
Manufacturing is important to our local community because it maintains a high quality local skill base, local and regional suppliers of materials and services and promotes training opportunities. The more we can offer existing and potential clients the better for everyone.
What advice do you have for emerging makers, designers and manufacturers?
I would recommend that emerging companies and individuals focus on clarity and communication. After building your technical skill clear communication of your expertise becomes essential.
