Factory Friday: Jay Surfboards

Last Friday we were invited to join GRAS Architecture Studio, as they visited Jason Burnett, at Jay Surfboards near Dalkeith. The visit was part of the Maker Libraries Network.

The Maker Library Network (MLN) is supported by the British Council as part of their Connect ZA programme, which aims to create connections between young creatives and audiences in the UK and South Africa. Conceived by Daniel Charny and developed with From Now On, the MLN is a new initiative that promotes collaboration and knowledge-sharing between designers and makers. The programme will culminate with an event to showcase the achievements of the first year, with the ambition to expand into a world-wide network. GRAS have set up a Maker Library in a caravan, which they are taking all over the country! Check out #makerlibraries

Watching Jason work was a fascinating insight into how a surfboard is shaped. Working in a purpose built greyroom in his workshop, the lighting is positioned so that he can see the shadows and the intricacies of the material. He explained the technicalities of how different channels, flutes and fins are made, which are bespoke depending on how each individual surfs.

He uses patterns to rough out the main piece; before routing, sanding and shaving the piece to the specific shape required. Aesthetic details (from printed fabrics to glitter based resins) can be added when the board is being glassed. Now on board #168, Jason splits his time between making boards and being out on the Scottish coast.

It was brilliant to be back in a workshop, and seeing the craftsmanship that goes into making these bespoke, incredibly fit for purpose objects. Thanks to GRAS for inviting us!
