Production details

At Byblos Papyri, we’ve developed Byblos, a sustainable, plant-based material made from papyrus pulp. It’s a beautiful alternative to wood, marble, and stone, featuring natural veining and sculptural flexibility. Beyond aesthetics, the papyrus plant plays a vital role in pollution filtration and water purification, making Byblos a material with real environmental value. We’re inviting artists and designers to collaborate with us, whether by using our material in your work (with proper material credit), or co-developing your ideas in our studio, where we handle production and bring expertise in working with this unique medium.

History

Founded in 2022 by Aya Moug, Aya Moug Studio is a design practice deeply inspired by ancient Egyptian heritage and committed to sustainable innovation. Aya, an Egyptian product and industrial designer based between Dubai and London, holds an MA in Industrial Design from Central Saint Martins. Her work bridges art, design, and environmental responsibility, leading to the creation of her first collection, MOOY, which debuted at the UAE Designer Exhibition 5.0. Aya’s passion for material innovation culminated in the development of Byblos, a unique sustainable biomaterial crafted from papyrus plants harvested along the Nile shores. Byblos not only revives this historically significant plant once central to Egyptian civilization, but also offers a natural, eco-friendly alternative to traditional materials like wood, stone, and marble, with applications ranging from furniture to wall cladding and tiles. Aya’s thoughtful approach has gained recognition in notable publications such as AD Middle East, Cosmopolitan, Hadara, Identity Magazine, and Design Wanted. In 2024, her dedication to sustainability was honoured when she was named one of the UAE’s Sustainable Heroes of the Year, alongside participating in prestigious events like the London Design Surface Show and COP28. Aya Moug Studio continues to push the boundaries of eco-conscious design while respectfully honoring a rich cultural legacy.
