History

Back in 1983, Clive and Lydia Hartwell were looking out across the panoramic views in Skye when they had the idea to find a way to make use of sheepskins that were being wasted locally. Since then, Skyeskyns, still a family business run by Lydia and her daughter Jess, have grown into tanners, makers and suppliers of luxurious sheepskins, home accessories and sustainably made clothing. Waternish, the heart of the business, is where the beautiful Skyeskyns showroom and tannery are based. They love to offer visitors the chance to witness craftsmanship and hear their story; the tannery is a renowned 5* visitor attraction. Over the years and with an ethos of ‘treading lightly’ and care for this environment guiding their journey, Skyeskyns have expanded their business to include a stylish boutique in Portree, a seasonal pop-up yurt café with a view and an online business that delivers to many long-standing customers all over the world.
