About Make Works Derby and Derbyshire
Welcome to Make Works Derby and Derbyshire
Make Work's Derby and Derbyshire is part of Derby Museums development and delivery of the Museum of Making, due to open in 2020. Both have a shared ethos to create engagement with local makers, manufacturers and fabricators in the region. Derby Museums feels it is crucial to allow for accessible and creative connections to be made across the region, thus, we are also working with Film-Maker Andy Taylor-Smith to deliver our listings in collaboration with Derby University and Derby College volunteer students. By having such a diverse team, and wealth of makers in Derby and Derbyshire we hope that our region can represent fully the creative breadth, and impact of making in the region, both historically and today. Alongside this, becoming a creative resource to start conversations, and break down the potential barriers faced when initially contacting a business, to share with you the people at the heart of making in Derby and Derbyshire.

Derby College Volunteer Students
Our team of four Derby College students are engaged with filming visits in a Photography Support role. Students are currently undertaking a programme of training sessions at Derby Museum & Art Gallery, facilitated by Film-Maker Andy Taylor-Smith. These sessions focus on the opportunities available through Make Works, to develop early technical skills in Photography, alongside transferable skills which could aid future progression in education and/or employment. These sessions aim to enable students with the verbal and technical skills and confidence essential to filming visits, but also to supply them with a curiosity to learn more about Derby and Derbyshire.
University of Derby Film-Making Volunteers
For this opportunity we are collaborating with two University of Derby students, Luke (BA Film production) and Bradley, (BA Media Production). These students were eager to develop their technical ability, alongside knowledge and experience of working in a live environment, under a professional mentor in Andy Taylor-Smith. These students are currently undertaking training on the entire process, from initial training and creating mock-listings at Derby Museum & Art Gallery, to undertaking filming on visits to makers, and finally to post-production and launch.
Andy Taylor-Smith is an integral member of the Make Works Derby & Derbyshire team. From piloting the initial listings in the region, to acting as a mentor for all students involved in the project.
